Southeast Case #  SE 2016-001

Address: Larchmere
Company: Van Auken Akins Architects
Architect: Justin Fliegel
Description:

New construction of a K-8 school building.

Notes:

Committee Actions/Submissions

Date: April 6, 2016
Committee: Local Design Review Committee
Action Type: Initial Plan Submission
Conditions/Notes:

Committee Comments

  • Needs signage at MLK and Larchmere to identify the school.
  • Will the courtyards get enough natural light
  • How will snow and debris blowing into the courtyard be handled?
  •  Committee has concerns about the six foot fence. They do not want it to look like a prison. (The architects indicated that they are looking at installing a decorative fence at the end of the courtyards.)
  • The building needs better articulation on Larchmere and MLK.
  • Also look at the possibility of removing the retaining wall between the parking to the west of the site and the playground and sloping it to improve visibility and make it feel as though it's more connected to the rest of the site.
  • Concrete ramps should be blended in with the building by using brick that is similar to the base of the building.
  • Add glass to the portion that pops up at the top on the side facing MLK.
  • Try to add more of a separation between the service and the main entry.
  • Is there enough space for cars to cue in the parent drop-off/pickup area.
  • The committee had concerns about the connectivity between the future soccer field and the playground.
  • Add directional signage in the parking lot, particularly at the circular drive.
  • Show a more pronounced Entry on Overlook.
  • Utility area needs better screening.
