Name: Clarence Oliver Arey

Birth/Established: May 18, 1857   Death/Dissolved: August 11, 1896

Biography:
Clarence O. Arey was a Victorian-era architect born in Buffalo, New York who had successful careers in both architecture and medicine. He graduated from the University of Michigan in Civil Engineering and settled in Cleveland as an architect by 1881, with an office in the Blackstone Block. He lived in a home he designed at 1854 East 79th Street. As an architect he had several major commissions including the Case School Gymnasium and School of Applied Science. He also designed two Euclid Avenue mansions. Three of his commissions were featured in the "Inland Architect," a notable architectural periodical of the time. His career occurred prior to the issuance of building permits by the City of Cleveland, thus much of his work remains unidentified. Upon the death of a son from diphtheria, he pursued a course in medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He returned to Cleveland, studying the different forms and causes of diptheria. He died at the age of thirty-nine, leaving a widow and two small children. He is buried in Lakeview Cemetery.
