Name: Henry J Harks

Birth/Established: January 6, 1865   Death/Dissolved: November 14, 1913

Biography:
Henry J. Harks attended St. Peter's School and graduated from St. John's College. He studied architecture with B. Hoerstmann and was later a designer for the Woods-Jenks Company. He then studied with architect Samuel W. Lane. His home at 1254 East 84th Street is still standing. He was appointed building inspector by Cleveland Mayor Farley in 1899. In 1903 Mayor Tom Johnson appointed him to the three-member building code commission. He was the architect of several buildings for the Roman Catholic Diocese in Cleveland, including St. Patrick Church (West Park), St. Stephen School, St. Thomas Aquinas Church and School, and St. Vincent Hospital. He lived in Chicago for a short period of time and while there designed the Basilica of St. Adalbert in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He also had several commissions in Toledo, Ohio that may have resulted from his brothers, who were priests at St. Michael Church and St. Louis Church there. He was also widely known as a musician and organist in Catholic churches. He was a resident of the Belgrave Apartments, 8615 Wade Park Avenue, at the time of his death. He died at St. Alexis Hospital after an illness of several months. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery.
